> Comprehensive prehabilitation programs improve health outcomes and quality of life for patients undergoing surgery and could create cost savings for healthcare systems

Patronus Health GmbH, developer of an interactive, app based prehabilitation program, announced today that the digital health start-up will receive fresh capital of approximately € 1 million as part of a pre-seed financing round under lead investor and business angel Georg Matheis, MD, and funding from the State of Hesse. The funds will be used to develop the Patronus Prehab App and set up the company.

Patronus Health is developing an interactive, app-based prehabilitation program to prepare patients for major surgery in the abdominal and chest area. As part of the pre-surgery assessment, the attending physician enters his patient's key clinical parameters into the Patronus Prehab App, which creates an individualized aerobic exercise program based on the information. The patient undergoes prehabilitation away from the clinic, but still under the guidance of his or her physician. Since the app assesses the patient's personal data in real time during the exercise, the attending physician can assess any existing risk, adapt the program, and optimally prepare the patient for surgery.

Patronus Health was founded as a spin-off of Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main in August 2021 and was created as a joint initiative by three physicians who recognized the medical need for more prehabilitation in the context of surgical or post-surgery patient care. Patronus Health received the E-Health Award 2021 from the state of Hesse in September. With this award, the state honors the most innovative start-ups.

"Often, we find ourselves dealing with things after surgery which could have been easier to manage or avoided completely with better pre-surgery habilitation. If we focus more on prehabilitation measures, we have a realistic chance of improving patient outcomes. This is where our idea for Patronus and the Prehab App came from," explains surgeon Prof. Andreas A. Schnitzbauer, MD, CEO and co-founder of Patronus Health.

The other founders are Charlotte Detemble (Chief Financial Officer), economist and medical student, Dora Žmuc, MD (Chief Business Development Officer), a physician also holding a master’s degree in management and economics in healthcare, and Mark Siller, Managing Director of the Heilbronn-based software developer, Seven D. Seven D and Patronus have entered into a strategic technical partnership for the further development of the app.

About prehabilitation

Prehabilitation is a new field of perioperative medicine that combines physical activity, nutrition and psychosocial well-being to positively impact patients' modifiable health factors before surgery. A prehabilitation program allows them to go into surgery with the best possible fitness. This optimization phase prior to major surgery can be compared to the preparation for a marathon: very few people would manage such an extreme physical effort without training.

Enormous cost reductions, better quality of life

Prehabilitation can reduce the likelihood of complications by up to 50%, reduce morbidity and mortality, improve quality of life, and shorten hospital stays. Evidence shows that this can result in cost savings of up to 30% for health care systems. Quality increases and costs decrease, which results in significant added value.1,2,3,4
