British Science Week was a landmark for us here at Unit DX. It included our first schools day, the hosting of the international science competition Fame Lab and it culminated with our official opening event (Friday 17th March).

The event was attended by over 100 guests from across the Bristol business and science communities. As the result of over two years of hard work it was an opportunity to reflect on project and to look to the future.

The level of excitement and energy at the event as guests explored the brand new space for the first time. The flexible lab and office space, was officially opened by Thangam Debbonaire MP.

She said: “The jobs of the future are coming right here to the centre of Bristol. We know that scientific research in this city changes the world but innovative research requires resources, investment, facilities and spaces to share ideas and support collaborations.”

“This facility will be not only an important and innovative space for research scientists in Bristol and the West of England it will be part of the local community.”

The UK is already a world leader when it comes to scientific innovation and research but there have always been significant barriers when converting this into successful businesses. Our mission was to remove these barriers with a space designed by scientists, for scientists.

The 15,000 sq ft industrial unit in St Philips has been transformed over the past 6 months by Quartz and JCA from a disused carpet store to a high spec science incubator. It contains flexible office space over two floors and 17 laboratories housing 24 ducted fume hoods.

Unit DX will provide up to 100 scientists and engineers with fully serviced laboratories, access to start of the art instrumentation from The Instrument Link and business support in a space that will support growing businesses.

Bristol’s Temple Quarter is in the process of transformation with the recent announcement of a new University of Bristol campus and Enterprise Zone Regeneration Project.

So much more than science facility with office space, our new science incubator provides tenants with access to a connected business network to speeds up the process of turning research into revenue. We are also set up connect emerging high quality science graduates with industry partners in relevant areas of research and innovation.

Dr Harry Destecroix co-founder of Unit DX said: “This is just the beginning. I’m really excited about what’s going to happen when we take scientists from different disciplines and mix them together under one roof in one of the UK’s most entrepreneurial cities.”

Local Councillor Asher Craig spoke at the event and said: “This is where start ups and scientific entrepreneurs have the opportunity to work alongside each other in what is a dynamic centre for collaboration and innovation.”

Thank you to everyone that attended and helped in our journey. We look forward to sharing this space with you in the future.

Unit DX is now a focal point for scientific enterprise.
