The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (Russian State University) announced today that a world leading scientist in the area of regenerative medicine and stem cell biology, Dr. Augustinus Bader joined MIPT Department of Biological and Medicinal Physics as the Adjunct Professor.

Dr. Bader is the director and professor for Applied Stem Cell Biology and Cell Technology at the University of Leipzig. He studied medicine in Italy (Chieti), Germany (Würzburg), China (Shanghai Second Medical College, burns), Switzerland (Bern, Inselspital, neurology) and the USA (Boston, MGH, Harvard Medical School, general and cardiac surgery).

The technological innovations developed by Prof. Augustinus Bader include methods, devices and pharmacological strategies for intraoperative point of care stem cell therapy following the physiology of normal wound healing processes. His long list of technological inventions includes the 3D cell process and device developments for or all major tissue types, which follow a bionic concept in tissue engineering. The pharmaceutical innovations include the discovery of the mode of action of therapeutic proteins that lead to tissue regeneration (e.g. liver and skin). At present, he is the initiator of 7 clinical studies in regenerative therapies both in human and veterinary medicine (burns, diabetic foot, bone, spinal cord injuries, tendon and cartilage regeneration). His platform technology for bedside (intraoperative) in situ and in vivo regeneration of damaged tissues is now being transferred to a larger field of clinical applications in a novel translational approach. This "stem cell bionics" technology encompasses the bionic principles for in vivo processes of tissue regeneration. The technology uses the physiology of the wound as a triggering (permissive) environment and translates stem cell activation and commitment processes into the body, using processes in situ in vivo thereby avoiding ex situ and ex vivo manipulations of stem cells. Professor Bader is transferring this bionic technology for stem cell therapy to an increasing number of hospitals on a worldwide scale to facilitate respective point of care therapies both in human and veterinary medicine.
