The SYLCHEM project brings together key industry players from the “biomass to chemicals” value chain: Arbiom (through its affiliate Biométhodes), Norske Skog Golbey, Prayon, as well as end-users including Soprema.

Arbiom (through its affiliate Biométhodes) announced the launch of the SYLCHEM project today which will demonstrate the scale-up of its technology of lignocellulose fractionation into sugars and lignin, providing both sustainable solutions to the chemical industry and new economic development opportunities for biomass rich regions. Using Arbiom’s biomass fractionation technology, poorly valorized local hardwood material will be converted into sustainable sugars and lignin, these products being then used as raw materials to produce chemicals such as lactic acid, succinic acid, propylene glycol and polyols, targeting applications such as biomaterials. The €4M loan from ADEME will support the building of a demonstration plant that will be co-located with Norske Skog Golbey’s pulp and paper site in the east of France.

SYLCHEM complements SYLFEED project, a 10.9M€ EU funded project from Biobased Industries Joint Undertaking, that started last September. SYLFEED project aims at demonstrating a novel “wood to food” value chain by effectively converting non-food biomass into feed ingredients for aquaculture.

Already demonstrated at pilot scale, the SYLCHEM project together with SYLFEED will allow for the improvement of the overall process and its operation in a 5kt/year capacity demonstration plant. Following a thorough evaluation, the SYLCHEM project was selected by the ADEME to receive 4M€ support. The SYLCHEM project brings together industrial partners covering all steps of the value chain:

> Biomass sourcing and industrial scale processing by Norske Skog Golbey, one of the leading newsprint producers in Europe

> Biomass fractionation by ARBIOM (though its affiliate Biométhodes)

> Phosphoric acid processing and industrial scale-up by Prayon, a global leader in phosphoric acid

> Evaluation of ARBIOM sugars in bioconversion processes to produce platform chemicals such as lactic acid, succinic acid and glycols by end-users.

> Evaluation of lignin conversion to polyols by Soprema, one of the world's leading companies in the field of waterproofing, roofing and insulation

The SYLCHEM project builds on years of development and collaboration between the partners, notably between ARBIOM and Norske Skog Golbey as part of BIOSKOG, an 18-months pre-study that received the support of the Region Grand Est and the European Regional Development Fund.

“The SYLCHEM project offers sustainable solutions for the chemicals industry. In addition, it also contributes to create additional value for biomass producers through the diversification of their activities in the bioeconomy” said Marc Chevrel, CEO of Arbiom.

“Soprema is pleased to participate to SYLCHEM collaborative project aiming to effectively convert lignin into raw materials for use in Soprema products and to contribute to the development of a biorefinery concept at Golbey Industrial site”, indicated Rémi Perrin, R&D director of Soprema.

SYLCHEM project has received funding from ADEME under the Programme d’Investissement d’Avenir. More info about ADEME:

ARBIOM is a technology company developing solutions to convert non-food biomass (including residues from the agriculture and forestry industries) into sustainable intermediates suitable for the feed, food, chemicals and fuels industry. In France, ARBIOM operates under the name Biométhodes SA and is located in Evry, France. In the USA, ARBIOM is headquartered in the Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, and operates a pilot plant in Norton, Virginia. After 15 years of developing proprietary enzyme technologies and 7 years scaling up its biomass fractionation process, ARBIOM is now engaged in consolidating the “wood to food” and “biomass to chemicals” value chains by integrating upstream with biomass stakeholders and downstream with leading industrial partners in the aquaculture, biotechnology and biobased industries.
