Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, Australia's largest child health research institute, today announced an agreement with BIOBASE, the leading provider of expert-curated biological databases, software and services for life science researchers. The agreement will see BIOBASE become the exclusive worldwide distributor of the Institute's web-based dysmorphology database, POSSUMweb (Pictures Of Standard Syndromes and Undiagnosed Malformations).

POSSUMweb is an online software tool that assists clinical geneticists, researchers, radiologists, pathologists, and pediatricians with diagnosis and teaching.

The POSSUMweb database includes information on over 4000 syndromes, including multiple malformations, chromosomal abnormalities, skeletal dysplasia's, and metabolic disorders, linked to over 30,000 images including photos, X-rays, scans, diagrams, and histology.

"Clinicians can search the database for traits, resulting in a target list of possible diagnoses. This is a powerful tool that provides detailed information about key clinical attributes, differential diagnoses, imaging and genetics in a rapid and easy manner" said Frank Schacherer, CTO at BIOBASE.

Dr James Dromey, Head of Commercialisation at Murdoch Childrens said

"With BIOBASE's expertise and international reach, the agreement will allow POSSUMweb to be made more broadly available to researchers and clinicians worldwide."

The POSSUMweb database is the result of more than 30 years of contributions from a team based at the Victorian Clinical Genetics Service (VCGS) and Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, based in Melbourne, Australia.
